BUCHAREST, Romania -- The Socialist Democratic Party and the Conservative Party formed a coalition on Friday (July 11th) to take part in the parliamentary elections scheduled for November. The coalition, named National Union, presented its government programme for the period 2008-2012. The ten-chapter document focuses on plans to resolve social problems and improve the image of Romania abroad. It envisages higher salaries and increases to the buying power of citizens; cuts to the value-added tax on food; reforms of education, healthcare and justice; investments in infrastructure and agriculture subsidies.
