BUCHAREST, Romania -- Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu announced on Monday (May 12th) that Interior Minister Cristian David will go to Italy this week in a bid to soothe growing hostility against Romanian immigrants. A series of crimes involving Romanian nationals is tarnishing the immigrants' image. In response, Italy's new government reportedly is considering whether to re-impose border checks and to make illegal immigration punishable by four years in prison. The government will discuss the proposal this week. Tariceanu announced David's planned trip during an emergency government session. (AFP, Mediafax, Reuters, AP, Hotnews.ro - 12/05/08)
